Welcome
to Barnstormers!
Maine's premier provider of antique, high-quality flooring made from
re-sawn vintage lumber.
Barnstormers!
works with homeowners, designers, architects and contractors to
deliver high-quality vintage lumber products including antique flooring
re-sawn from recycled barns, mill buildings and unique structures.
Our antique flooring is carefully produced from hand selected stock
and milled to the exact specifications of each customer.
Using
reclaimed southern yellow pine (also called heart pine, yellow pine,
longleaf pine, and old growth southern yellow pine) and other species
salvaged from historic and well known buildings in New England
Barnstormers! produces superior flooring and related products.
Reclaimed
lumber provides a source of raw material with deep rich color and character
that is impossible to recreate with new wood. Recycling wood from
structures built with first growth lumber is an important step in both
preserving the environment and meeting the needs of green builders and
renovators‹and at the same time producing a better product than
what is commercially available.
First
growth wood, like southern yellow pine and Douglas fir, is a far superior
raw material compared to wood harvested today. The older wood
grew more slowly, producing a much denser, durable wood‹with extremely
tight growth rings. Age also contributes to the character and
color of the wood used to produce beautiful floors.
In
addition to the superior quality of re-claimed and re-sawn wood, it
allows us to provide wide plank floors that show the unique patina and
character only available from authentic reclaimed and original lumber.
Starting
with antique wood is only the first step in producing a high quality
old wood floor. Weather it¹s a floor of white pine, southern
yellow pine, heart pine, long leaf pine, hand-hewn barn beams, chestnut,
oak, or other north American species, each floor is made form wood that
is graded, hand selected, carefully de-nailed, sawn on our mill, planed
to the required thickness, and profiled to exact tolerances. The
most common profile is tongue and grove, but others are available to
meet the needs of the project.
Barnstormers!
also provides reclaimed and antique lumber to use as paneling stock,
table tops, bar tops, cabinet stock, and timber frames. Antique hand
hewn beams are available for mantels, restoration and renovations in
lengths up to 50 feet. Our Hand hewn beams are often used in additions
and new homes as accents to provide an authentic, historic touch.
Based
in Portland, Maine, Barnstormers! has access to barns, mills, factories,
and homes that produce old barn board, period molding, original wide
pine/pumpkin pine floors, attic floors and loft floors. Original antique
floors are available in widths up to 24 inches.
Barn
boards and old barn wood including the hand hewn timber timbers
in pine, spruce, oak, chestnut, and hemlock can be made into flooring
or used as is and for authentic siding, paneling, and ceilings.
Barnstormers!
is always turning up unusual and interesting natural and man-made
materials like granite steps, antique barn door hardware, hand-cleaved
blackboard slate, industrial antiques and other building parts. Please
take a look at some of the material available now, or call to let
us know what you¹re looking to find.
